The Seattle Sounders were undeniably in New York City this Saturday as they brought their Cascadia downpour with them to Yankee Stadium. In a game that took place on a lake, NYCFC managed to climb out of the water, or better yet a 1-0 deficit, to defeat Seattle 2-1.

From kickoff, players became drenched due to the monsoon that circled over The Bronx. However, throughout the first half, NYCFC came out and controlled the match despite the poor conditions. 

However, one mistake in the defense led Seattle to steal a goal before halftime on their first and only chance of the half.

Frustration was an evident part of the team’s, and Vieira’s, body language heading into the locker room at halftime. Captain David Villa slammed a sign on his way down the dugout steps, letting his frustration show. 

With the commencement of the second half, NYCFC pushed onwards and eventually got rewarded for their hard work through a questionable penalty call. Villa stepped up and launched a missile past the Seattle keeper to notch his 50th for NYCFC.

“It’s important for me because the goal is my goal always because I’m a striker,” said the Spaniard. “And I think that goal gave a lot of points in a  good moment for NYCFC.”

Villa didn’t stop at one on the day as he later earned his 51st goal for NYCFC, as he hit an incredible volley off of a great bit of skill from Jack Harrison, who slotted into the midfield for today’s match.

“I knew after David [Villa] had crossed the ball to me initially he’d be on the back post,” said Harrison. “So I kinda figured that’s where the space would be and I freed myself up some space, and I managed to get a cross off, and David [Villa] finished it off perfectly.”

Following Villa’s second of the match, the rain began to lighten up as NYCFC went on to secure yet another comeback win on the season. In what was a match with terrible conditions, NYCFC managed to push through en route to an important three points.

“I think we didn’t think about the conditions too much, we just tried to win the game,” said the Spaniard.  “The pitch was obviously bad because the ball stops sometimes with the water but I think we did well and we are so happy for the win.”

For Vieira, confidence in the team was always there, especially when his team continued to improve in the torrential downpour. 

“You can see the technical part of our team, the way that we pass the ball around, the way that we make the right decision because we keep the game really simple,” said Vieira. “The more the game went on, the more comfortable I was. I think we played really well and yes, I enjoyed watching the team play today.”

After a disappointing loss against their rivals on Wednesday, this comeback win bodes well for the ‘Boys in Blue’ as they prepare to take on the Red Bulls next weekend in their first “Hudson River Derby” of the MLS season.
