Hockey Rangers draft pick Matthew Robertson signs entry-level contract by Kamelya Kizar October 9, 2019 On Tuesday, the New York Rangers announced that they have agreed to an entry-level contract with defenseman Matthew Robertson. The 18 year old was drafted in the second round (49th overall) during the 2019 NHL Draft in Vancouver. The three year deal is set to begin during the 2020-2021 season. Unless the Rangers call up Robertson to the NHL roster (which is highly unlikely), the defenseman will remain with the Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL). Robertson is currently ineligible to be assigned to the New York Rangers’ AHL affiliate team in Hartford. Per the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, Robertson is not able to be assigned until he reaches the age of 20. The financial details of the contract were not disclosed. The 6’4”, 201-pound rear guard has accumulated 58 points in 129 WHL games (14 goals and 44 assists. In his last two seasons, Robertson was tied for second among WHL defensemen age 18 or younger in goals (14), while ranking fourth in assists (43) and points (57). Matthew Robertson will become the New York Rangers’ sixth player in the last five years to sign an entry-level contract the same year that they were drafted. With this entry-level contract being signed, Robertson joins the Rangers’ ever-growing list of young talent.
