The New York Red Bulls once again cruised to victory over their crosstown rivals, beating New York City FC 4-1. The Red Bulls have once again clinched the series against NYCFC, winning two games to their opponent’s one.

The Red Bulls were in charge throughout the entire match, and finally got the breakthrough in the 20th minute, as Bradley Wright-Phillips scored, off an assist from Sacha Kljestan. The Red Bulls found the back of the net just a few minutes later defender Ronald Zubar scored a header from a corner. The Red Bulls again tallied after receiving a penalty in the 41st minute because of a handball from NYCFC defender Frederic Brillant.

The Red Bulls scored again in the 70th minute, once again by Wright-Phillips, but not before Tommy McNamara scored a goal from distance a few minutes before halftime. Despite the goal, NYCFC could not come back from the deficit, and lost their coach, Patrick Vieira, during the water break to a red card after screaming at Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch and referee Mark Geiger. They suffered a late red card to Ethan White, who received his second yellow card, in the 89th minute.

The match saw excellent performances from Wright-Phillips, who now has eight goals in six games against NYCFC, and Kljestan, who recorded two assists in addition to his goal, earning him Man of the Match honors. On the connection of the two players, Marsch said, “whenever Sacha’s finding gaps in important spots, he knows that his first option is Brad.”

Both coaches spoke about the referee, who Marsch criticized a few days before the match. Vieira, though accepting the penalty call, believed that Marsch’s comments “had an impact,” while the Red Bulls coach had only compliments for the refereeing staff. “I think he was very poised,” Marsch said about Geiger.

Overall, the Red Bulls put in a strong performance after a tough 2-2 draw against the Philadelphia Union last week. “I feel like now we’re starting to really show not that we’re turning the corner, but that we’ve turned the corner.”

New York’s next match will be on Sunday, July 31 against the Chicago Fire
