It’s a red letter day (no pun intended) for the New York Red Bulls and United States soccer as a whole today as Matt Miazga completed his transfer to European giants Chelsea F.C. Miazga, at only 20 years of age, is getting an opportunity to impress on the biggest stage in the world and to give a good name to the Red Bulls and U.S. Soccer.

Sporting Director Ali Curtis had this to say about the move: “It is a bittersweet day for the New York Red Bulls. We are very happy for Matt to get the opportunity but it is tough to see him leave after coming through our academy to the first team — there is a different feel when one of your homegrown players leaves.”

It sure is bittersweet as the Red Bulls are losing a bright star to another team, but at the same time Ali Curtis, the Red Bulls, and U.S. Soccer coach Jurgen Klinsmann should all be excited to see Miazga in the premier league. This move will only continue to improve the view of American players, the MLS and the play of the national team.

Miazga himself is very excited for the move, but made sure to thank the Red Bulls for his time there. He said in a statement, “It was a dream come true to sign my first professional contract with my hometown club. I want to say thank you to the entire New York Red Bulls organization including all of my coaches, teammates and staff that were there with me during my time with the club.”

Miazga will obviously be missed by the Red Bulls organization but it will be exciting to see how he develops with Chelsea in the Premier League.
