The New York Red Bulls II took down their upstate rivals 2-1, at Montclair State University’s Soccer Park for the first time in a full 90-minute match. NYRB II struck first, in the fifth minute, when midfielder Arun Basuljevic broke into the Rhinos’ box and booted the ball into the back corner, beating goalkeeper Tomas Gomez. The goal was Basuljevic’s first goal of his professional career. NYRB II coach John Wolyniec praised Basuljevic’s attacking position, as he is filling in for the injured Vincent Bezecourt, who leads the USL in assists (8). “I think you can see in the games earlier in the year that Arun shows a lot of qualities in the attacking third. Nothing too out of the ordinary for him.” NYRB II’s forward Junior Flemmings mirrored a younger version of the Red Bulls’ star Bradley Wright-Phillips. He was attacking on the wing and taking chances in the box. One play in the first half involved Red Bulls’ Ethan Kutler, who found a sprinting Flemmings, but missed wide right of the Rochester goal. The Rhinos’ offense was led by Kenardo Forbes and Jordan Dover. Dover, a centerback, played the role of an offensive-defender. He was calling out signals to Forbes and the rest of the Rochester attacking line. NYRB II played a man up on Rochester, following the 42nd minute. Rhinos’ defender Joe Farrell was issued his second yellow card. He tripped forward Flemmings early in the first half. The Red Bulls started the second half as they began the match. Forward Stefano Bonomo scored his second goal of the season with a shot from the wing that landed on the opposite side as goalkeeper Gomez. Bonomo was subbed out ten minutes after his goal, when Zeiko Lewis, who started the prior match against Lousiville, entered the match. Bonomo credited the whole midfield line for their stellar job during the game. “Anytime we score goals and get clean sheets gives us confidence. [The team’s] going to take this moving forward [against first-place Charleston next week].” Rochester was on the board when, in the 71st minute, defender Wal Fall capitalized on a penalty kick. NYRB II looks to add to the win column when they take on first-place Charleston, next Saturday at 7 pm. Charleston is coming into their next match with a 3-1 win over Louisville under their belt. Rochester will stay on the road, as they travel to Pennsylvania to play the Harrisburg City Islanders, this Tuesday. Harrisburg City, also, looks to avenge a loss. They were shutout by Tampa Bay, on Saturday.
