Uncategorized Red Bulls Win US Open Cup tie with Silverbacks, and draw a Rematch with Cosmos by Staff Post June 20, 2015 (John Minchillo / Associated Press) The New York Red Bulls won easily against the Atlanta Silverbacks in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Goals from Lloyd Sam, Ronald Zubar, and Sean Davis helped see the Red Bulls through to the round of 16. And in that round of 16, the Red Bulls will meet with a familiar opponent, the New York Cosmos. Last year on Long Island, the Cosmos took down the Red Bulls in the fourth round 3-0. This time around the stakes will be higher as it will be in the round of 16 and the Red Bulls will be the hosts. In addition to hosting this round, if the Red Bulls advance they will also host the quarter-finals match as well against either Philadelphia Union or D.C. United. This is a massive opportunity for the Red Bulls and they know it. Red Bulls Head Coach Jesse Marsch knows this as well. He said “I’m just trying to stay focused, one game at a time here.” This matchup was just moments away from being an NYCFC vs. Red Bulls game but the Cosmos (who were playing NYCFC on Long Island) scored an equalizer in stoppage time and then went on to win in penalties. Such a comeback win means there’s certainly no guarantee that the Red Bulls will have an easy time against the Cosmos, even playing at home. It gets even tougher for the Red Bulls when you consider that the Cosmos are off until the July first meeting and the Red Bulls have three matches in between now and then. It will be a tough task for Marsch to make sure his players are rested and ready for the round of 16. Nevertheless, emotions will be high when these two meet again, with the Red Bulls planning on flipping the script this time around.
