Baseball Report: David Wright, Mets to discuss possible return to the majors Could “Captain America” be ready to play on a major league field for the first time since 2016? by Daniel Yanofsky September 13, 2018 While the future of David Wright’s baseball career has come into question the last few years, the immediate future might have some hope to it. The Mets and Wright will hold a joint press conference today at Citi Field around 1:45 p.m. ET. The Mets announced a 1:45 p.m. news conference at Citi Field with David Wright, Jeff Wilpon and John Ricco “to discuss the plan and timeline concerning David Wright for the remainder of the season.” I suspect the plan beyond this season will also be a topic of discussion. — Tim Healey (@timbhealey) September 13, 2018 Rumors have been swirling that Wright will finally rejoin the Mets as a major league player towards the end of the season. The teams last homestand is on September 25. Wright, 35, hasn’t played in a major league game since 2016. There has been hope he was improving from a multitude of injuries he is currently dealing with. In the last five years, Wright has dealt with surgeries on his neck, herniated discs, bone spurs and ligament tears. Most of the injuries stem from his issues with spinal stenosis. Wright played in 12 rehab games this season between the Single-A and Triple-A systems of the Mets. Wright joined the team in late August and practiced all over Citi Field, playing with teammates and the coaches. While he has denied the claims, rumors of a rift between him and ownership have taken over the headlines, due to the direction both sides want to take. Wright, owed a hefty sum if he resumes playing time, doesn’t believe it will be an issue. The question of money may be brought up during the press conference. As the season winds down, Mets fans are looking for any glimmer of hope towards the future. So is the captain of the team, who may have some positive news to share for the first time in years.
