When the Mets traded for second baseman Neil Walker in 2015, many expected it wouldn’t be for the long run. One trade for Jay Bruce later, and the possibilities became endless. With Dilson Herrera no longer an option, the Mets decided to keep Walker in the fold. He accepted a one-year, $17.2 million qualifying offer from the team in November.

There may be a chance Mets fans will see more of Neil Walker in the future.

Walker informed MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo that “there’s potential for a long-term deal” with The Amazin’s. The 31-year old had a line of .282/.347/.476 while hitting 23 home runs (a career high) with 55 RBIs in 113 games played with the Mets in 2016. His season ended shortly when he had surgery in September to repair a herniated disc in his lower back.

The idea of having Walker as the everyday second basemen doesn’t sound so bad, especially if healthy. He has proved he can be consistent when the Mets need him to be. The New York Daily News stated (according to Walker) a plan for a long-term deal was apparently discussed before he had surgery. It appears the talks have (quietly) returned as a result of the surgery being successful.

To prove his worth, Walker has brought multiple gloves to Spring Training camp. He is willing to help out at first and third base. Rumors have already begun regarding the extension. Depending how he does this season, Walker may just get his wish.
