Ring of Honor announces the debut of the Women of Honor Championship

The evolution of women’s wrestling continues with Ring of Honor’s announcement of a Women of Honor Title

It took some time, but women are finally getting the respect they deserve in pro wrestling. While WWE wasn’t the first or last place to start a “Women’s Revolution”, they have helped innovate it. Ring of Honor is looking to get on board with the cause as well with their Women of Honor division. In the middle of their Final Battle PPV, the company announced a tournament that will be taking place to crown the newly created Women of Honor Championship.

It has been a long time coming. While the company has had women’s matches, they have been usually saved for pre-shows, or YouTube exclusives. Ring of Honor is one of the main U.S. promotions that has not had a set plan for the women on their roster, until now. The list of alumni that has gone through the company include Awesome Kong, Sara Del Ray and Cheerleader Melissa. Now, a new chapter will be created.

The tournament will be a huge moment for ROH mainstays like Deonna Purazzo, Mandy Leon and Kelly Klein. It will also provide an opportunity for Cody Rhodes’ wife, Brandi, to have her own platform to shine. A dark horse pick in the tournament will be Sumie Sakai, who has taken the pro wrestling world by storm. Talent from the Japanese promotion Stardom will also be included in the tournament, like Mayu Iwatani.

How the Women of Honor stars will be treated going forward will be interesting to look at. ROH will look to show female wrestlers around the world that they are another brand to choose between. Sit back and relax folks, the next few months of Women of Honor Wrestling should be quite a treat.
