The New York Riveters and the National Women’s Hockey League, announced on Wednesday, that Morgan Fritz-Ward and Madison Packer are the first players to sign with the organization for the 2016-2017 season.

General Manager Chad Wiseman announced that Fritz-Ward and Packer, who’s leadership earned them assistant captain roles in 2015-2016, were each signed to one-year contracts worth 15,000 dollars.

Wiseman said, “Fritz-Ward’s speed, relentless work ethic and ability to play in any game situation make her a huge asset to our team.” He added, “She is a leader both on and off the ice, and having her back in a Riveters jersey is an important first step for our club’s success next season.”

The Mason City, Iowa native scored six points in 17 games with the Riveters during the 2015-2016 campaign, but did not get into either of the two playoff contests against the Boston Pride due to an upper body injury.

Fritz-Ward said, “I am very honored and excited to be welcomed back by the Riveters and can’t wait to get the season started.” She added, “I hope to bring back a strong work ethic and high energy to the line-up next season.”

Packer appeared in 16 regular season contests for the Riveters, while lighting the lamp three times and getting the helpers on four other goals. During the Isobel Cup Playoffs, the Detroit native, was able to find the back of the net one time.

Wiseman said, “Packer is a natural leader and proven winner at the college level, she is someone we will rely on to help the young players make the transition from college to professional hockey.”

Packer said, “I am so excited and humbled to return to the Riveters next season, I am extremely grateful to my friends and especially my family for all of the love, support and encouragement they have shown me.”

She added, “I think I learned a lot last year on and off the ice, I am hoping to take those lessons, both positive and negative, and hopefully use them to propel the Riveters through a very successful second season.”

The Riveters finished the 2015-2016 season in last place, while putting up a 4-12-2 record and falling to the Pride top seeded Pride in their best of three semifinal round matchup in the Isobel Cup Playoffs.

The restricted free agency period continues to run through April 30, with free agency beginning on May 1 going through July 31. The 2016 NWHL Draft will take place June 18.
