Baseball Robinson Cano joins the 2,500 hit club in Tuesday night’s nail bitter by Jesse Natale May 8, 2019 Going into Tuesday night’s game, New York Mets second baseman Robinson Cano was stuck on hit 2,499; going 0-14 in his previous four games. In his first at-bat in San Diego on Tuesday, Robbie hit a double off rookie, Cal Quantrill. Cano now joins an exclusive club with only Albert Pujols (3,106), and Miguel Cabrera (2,712), ahead of him in hits among active players. Robinson also now has the sixth most hits among Dominican-born players; sitting comfortably behind Adrian Beltre, Albert Pujols, Vladimir Guerrero, Julio Franco, and Manny Ramirez. Following Tuesday night’s game Cano said, “It means a lot. You look back, and it’s something that you dream about as a kid, to be able to play in the big leagues and be successful. To be able to accomplish that, it’s good.” Robinson Cano has been scuffling over his last few games before going 4-5 in the game against the Padres. Cano started the season slow but seemed to have found his groove as the season grew on, before getting hit in the hand twice while up at bat. The second strike to the hand seemed to have ruined Robbie’s groove, then putting him in his 0-14 slump. Over Robinson Cano’s career he has a batting average of .304, with 314 home runs, and an on-base percentage of .354. It’s not likely that this slow start to the season will continue. Robbie will look to grow on this four-hit performance in the final game of the series Wednesday afternoon in San Diego.
