With the 168th pick in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected former Rutgers fullback Michael Burton.

After an anonymous scout called Burton a “typical Jersey meathead” as reported by NJ.com, Burton proved all his doubters wrong as he was the second fullback selected behind fourth round draftee Jalston Fowler out of Alabama. “He looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane,” the scout said. “When I see that meathead Rob Lowe commercial where he is in the tanning bed,” the scout said, “that’s who he reminds me of.”

Mark Dulgerian from NFL.com analyzed Lions new addition and said, “Detroit adds a pass catching fullback who can move around as an H-back in that offense. He brings a unique skill set to their roster and should also contribute on special teams.”

After coming to Rutgers as a former walk on running back, Burton moved to fullback and earned his scholarship after his redshirt freshman season. Burton paved the way for the running backs more often than having the ball in his hands himself, but he is a fantastic pass-catcher out of the backfield. The Long Valley, N.J. native had three receiving touchdowns at Rutgers, catching 47 passes for 401 yards. Burton also had 22 carries for 116 yards.

The gritty and tough football player will help the Lions on special teams and outwork anybody.

The 5-foot-11, 242-pounder is a crushing blocker and Walterfootball.com says about Burton, “Mike Burton is a solid pass-catcher and blocker, and he’ll be able to contribute on special teams.”

Burton joins Tyler Kroft (third round) as the only Rutgers players selected up to this point.
