Rutgers Lands Florida Defensive Tackle Jarrod Hewitt

After landing in-state linebacker Solomon Manning Monday, Rutgers accepted a commitment Tuesday afternoon from Venice, Fla. defensive tackle Jarrod Hewitt while on a visit to Piscataway.

The 6-2, 290-pound three star recruit (according to the 247Sports Composite) chose Rutgers over offers from Virginia Tech, Temple, Indiana, Pittsburgh, Purdue, South Florida, Central Florida, among others.

The powerful junior cites impressive workout numbers totaling 415-pounds in the bench and 510-pound squats. Last fall, the No. 77 ranked defensive tackle in the country according to the 247Sports Composite racked up 112 total tackles including 74 solo and 14 sacks for the Indians.

In his highlight tape, Hewitt fights through constant double teams, powering his way through. The first defensive lineman commit for the Scarlet Knights helped his team to a 10-2 overall record in 2014.

On numerous occasions last season, and more so against the top Big Ten Conference Teams (Michigan State, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Ohio State), the defensive line got pushed around, and the run defense suffered in the blowout losses. Hewitt figures to help mend the undersized defensive line and wreck havoc on opposing offensive lines, quarterbacks, and running backs.

The Florida native becomes the tenth to Rutgers’ recruiting class of 2016 joining running back Trey Sneed, quarterback Anthony Russo, offensive lineman Nick Krimin, wide receivers Ahmed Bah, Taysir Mack, and Mo Jabbie, along with linebackers Elias Reynolds, Manning, and Jonathan Pollock.
