Baseball Sabathia cleared to resume baseball activities after surgery by Chris Passarelli January 9, 2019 New York Yankees starting pitcher, C.C. Sabathia, was cleared early Tuesday to resume all activities, including baseball, after heart surgery. The surgery was done to place a stint in Sabathia’s heart after a blockage was discovered. Sabathia is good as new, and will start his rehab process before Spring Training begins late next month. Sabathia’s clearance paves the way for the Yankees to officially start the Sonny Gray sweepstakes. Sabathia is slated to be the fifth starter, but with uncertainty looming about his health to start the season, wasn’t penciled in just yet. Gray has been kept around for a myriad of reasons, one of them being an emergency replacement for Sabathia. Gray is halfway out of town, and now Brian Cashman can focus on getting the right deal done for him. As mentioned many times before, he’s lost a little leverage due his open nature about the potential trade. Other GMs know he wants to unload Gray, and know that he’ll have to sweeten the deal in order for them to take on Gray’s contract and what looks to be damaged goods at this point. Regardless, Sabathia is healthy, ready to go in what will most likely be his final season in Pinstripes. He’ll hopefully ride off into the sunset as a World Series champion, and he will be the calming veteran presence the Yankees will need throughout what’s always a long baseball season.
