Saddle River Day fends off Teaneck charge 49-39

Dani McMahon and Danielle Deoul scored 13 points apiece while Kayla Oge netted 10 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the tenth-seeded Saddle River Day Rebels defeated the seventh-seed Teaneck Highway Women 49-39 in the Round of 16 of the Bergen County Girls Basketball Tournament at Ridgefield Park High School. Saddle River Day will play second-seeded Northern Highlands at Becton High School.

“This is the deepest we have gone in the tournament so its great for the program and players,” said Saddle River Day Head Coach Danny Brown. “We got some rebounds and were able to cash in on them.”

On Danielle McMahon’s performance Brown added, “She is the best defensive player in the county average nine steals a game.”

Leading 39-31 in the fourth, the Rebels went on a 9-2 run to put the game out of reach. Deoul sharp reverse layup made the score 42-31 while back to back layups by Carly Christofi increased the lead to 48-33.

Saddle River Day led 31-17 at halftime but Teaneck stormed back in the 3rd quarter with the tandem of Faith and Hannah Ashby who combined to score 13 points to cut the deficit down to 37-31. Faith Ashby poured in a game high 15 points.

In the 1st quarter, the Rebels charged out of the gates 9-0. McMahon contributed on both sides of the ball draining jump shots, fast break layups and blocking shots. Teaneck’s first points of the game came on a three-pointer by Hannah Ashby. Saddle River Day led 15-5 at the end of the quarter. Deoul took over in the 2nd quarter attacking the basket and hitting layups plus free throws.

“We came out with a lot of energy getting rebounds and steals which led us to finishing plays off,” said Daniella McMahon.
