College Saint Peter’s Women’s Basketball Edged By Marist by Adrienne J. Romero January 25, 2018 The Saint Peter’s women’s basketball team’s overall record dropped to 3-16 after an 86-53 defeat to Marist on Tuesday night at home. Senior guard Alyssa Velles led the Peacocks with 13 points. Velles was followed by fellow senior guard Talah who tallied eight points, freshman forward Dajiah Martin with six points and freshman guard Haley Dalonzo with five points. Senior and sophomore forwards Samantha Meier and Zoe Pero added a pair of four points as sophomore forward Ashlie Howell led the team with seven rebounds. Maura Fitzpatrick led Marist (10-10) with 20 points as Grace Vander-Weide trailed with 17, Alana Gilmer with 14 and Rebekah Hand with 12. The Peacocks got a quick early lead thanks to a jumper by Hughes and three-pointer by freshman guard D’Aviyon Magazine for the 5-0 lead. The Red Foxes then turned around and responded with 13 points to claim the 13-5 lead. Senior forward Sajanna Bethea added more points to the board with a put-back layup, 13-7, and Dalonzo added two more to cut the deficit to 15-10. Martin scored behind the line to end the quarter, trailing Marist 18-11. Saint Peter’s continued to compete as Howell made a free throw and Dalonzo knocked down a mid-ranger, trailing 20-14. Meier then hit a jumper, 23-16, but Marist continued to extend their lead. Sophomore guard Sammy Lochner and Howell responded with a pair of layups, trying to cut the 35-20 deficit. SPU ended the half with the 38-25 disadvantage, Velles hit a shot from downtown and Howell with a pair of points before the break. Velles scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half, but the Red Foxes outscored the Peacocks 45-28 and sealed the 86-53 victory.
