High School Sports Sayreville Bombers Explode in Second Half of Championship Game Sayreville 41, Middletown North 14 by Kelsi Brown December 4, 2016 (Photo by Tom Horak – Double G Media) Saturday afternoon the Middletown North Lions took on the Sayreville Bombers at “The Birthplace of College Football,” High Point Solutions Stadium. Both teams went into what turned out to be an exhilarating playoff game with the same record of 9-2. In North II, Group 4, Sayreville was ranked number one, while Middletown North followed behind at number two. Last season, Middletown North was ranked third in their division while Sayreville trailed behind ranked as eighth. The Lions, coached by Steve Bush, started the championship final game off strong. Senior, WR Brendan Kube received a 19-yd pass from QB Donald Glenn taking the lead in the first quarter. Entering this game, Kube had 15 receiving TDs in his varsity career. With just over two minutes left in the first quarter, the Lions scored another TD with a 17-yd run by junior RB Connor Welsh. (Photo by Tom Horak – Double G Media) The Bombers, coached by Chris Beagan, were ready to fight back in the second quarter. Senior QB Jayson DeMild ran the ball for a 2-yd TD. Prior to this game, DeMild had six rushing TDs in his varsity career. Sayreville came out with even more energy in the second half of the game. The team continued to block out Middletown North’s offense from scoring for the rest of the game. Jaquae Roberts had a 10-yd run TD in the third quarter helping close the gap. The extra point attempted by senior kicker Mathew Crowley was missed, keeping the score at 14-13 Lions. Two minutes later, Senior Brandon Cenvci had a 40-yd interception return for the Bombers. The third quarter ended with a 20-14 score in favor of the Bombers. Three more TD’s were scored in the last quarter adding to the deficit for the Lions. TD’s were scored by Jayson DeMild, Jaquae Roberts, and Ciyro McMoore. DeMild and Roberts both ended the game with a total of two TDs each. Kicker for the Bombers, Matthew Crowley had four extra points. Kicker Mark Whitford, also had an extra point. This win was the Sayreville High School football team’s fifth championship title.
