Once again, it will be a bitter division rival facing them on game 82, as well. The Rangers must come away with a point in today’s matinee against the New Jersey Devils, or their post season vacation plans begin, as opposed to their post season game plans. For the Devils, eliminating the Rangers from the playoffs would go along way towards soothing the pain of their own horrible season and questionable future. Today is their Stanley Cup. A win doesn’t even guarantee the Rangers anything. The Carolina Hurricanes get the last word on determining who makes the show when they play Tampa Bay later tonight. For the Rangers to get in, they have to come away with one more point than the Canes do today. Both teams have 91 points, but Carolina has the head-to-head advantage so they win the tie-breaker. A Rangers win, coupled with a Hurricanes overtime loss is good enough. After watching the way Carolina has been playing with their season on the line, and seeing what the Rangers consider a do-or-die performance Thursday night, it isn’t looking good for New York. The Hurricanes have gone 8-1-1 in their last ten games. Last night, they blew the Atlanta Thrashers right off of the ice in a six to one thrashing. Yes, that would be the very same Atlanta Thrashers the Rangers couldn’t even score one goal on. One could argue that the Thrashers were tired having played back-to-back, but did they really play on Thursday? Really? It is really unbelievable that the New York Rangers have allowed themselves to get into this position for a second time in two years. Today’s results will lead to many questions and much speculation. Hopefully, we will be talking about how they match-up against the Washington Capitals, their only possible opponent after Buffalo’s win over Philadelphia last night. Hopefully, the Rangers display the spirit and passion that has made this team one of the most endearing and exciting Rangers teams in years. Hopefully.
