Severino strong in season debut

Luis Severino was excellent in his return to the mound on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels. Sevy went four strong innings of two hit ball, surrendering two walks and striking out four, including two to end his start. In addition, Severino controlled the strike zone masterfully, having 47 of his 67 pitches be strikes.

The best part of Severino’s game Tuesday night, other than command, was the fact that he was able to work out of a first inning jam with a double play ball, AND had the velocity to boot throughout all four innings. If anything, he got stronger as the game went along.

Gleyber Torres hit his 38th home run of the season to blow the game wide open. A six-run fourth inning put the game away for good, with Torres’ home run capping off the night.

After Severino left the game, a combination of Jonathan Loaisiga, Stephen Tarpley, Corey Gearrin and Chance Adams shut the door on the Angels and locked down the shutout for the Yankees.

It was overall a good night for the Yankees, with one exception, but that will be covered in a separate article. The magic number for the Yankees to clinch the American League East is now down to two, and if the Rays lose to the Dodgers, will be down to one.
