The New York Liberty, with a single move, added the perfect combination of youth, experience, and skill to their roster. Shoni “Showtime” Schimmel, an All-Star point guard from the Atlanta Dream, the first round selection in the 2014 WNBA Draft, was acquired with the Liberty’s 2017 second-round pick.

Shoni, entering her third season in the WNBA, brings more of that winning attitude along with the ball-handling skills and passing ability that will make the Liberty offense less predictable.

Isiah Thomas, Team President, feels that he got an excellent player on the court and off. At 23, Shimmel is very community oriented. Not surprising considering that Shoni, a Native American out of the reservation in Mission, Oregon, is very familiar with the struggle of the have-nots.

“She takes pride in giving back to the community and shares the same core values we look for in every member of our team,” Thomas proclaimed.

Her story includes a road that took her from her home with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla to the University of Louisville, where she led the Cardinals to the NCAA title game in 2013 as a junior.

“Shoni has demonstrated she can shine on the big stage, and I am confident she will thrive as a member of the New York Liberty,” Thomas expressed.

Shoni has shown the ability to do multiple things in her WNBA career, averaging eight points and three assists a game with nearly two three pointers a game in two All-Star seasons. She brings a new dimension to the attack, no question.

“Shoni is a good fit for our style of play,” Thomas explained. “Her long-range shooting will really allow us to spread the floor on the offensive.”

The New York Liberty continue to build on the team that came within a game of the WNBA Finals last season. They will open their historic 20th WNBA regular season on Saturday May 14th in Washington D.C against the Mystics and open their home schedule the following night in Madison Square Garden against the Dallas Wings.
