Skeeters Sweep Double Header Over Patriots

625storeygame1webSugar Land, TX – The Sugar Land Skeeters (32-30) swept the doubleheader from the Somerset Patriots (35-27) Saturday evening at Constellation Field. The two teams combined to play 17 innings and 5 hours and 44 minutes of baseball. The Skeeters are now 8-1 against the Patriots this season. Somerset remains just 1.0 game up on the Long Island Ducks with eight games remaining in the first half Liberty Division race.

 

Game One Recap

 

The Sugar Land Skeeters tripled up the Somerset Patriots 6-2 in game one of the doubleheader. The Skeeters scored in all but two of the six innings in which they batted.

 

“When you’re playing a doubleheader you’re approach doesn’t change,” said Mycal Jones who finished with two hits despite the loss. “We are all professionals here.”

 

Eric Farris laced an RBI double in the top of the first inning, but the Skeeters would score six unanswered runs.

 

In the home half of the first inning Travis Scott, the Skeeters franchise leader in hits and RBI, clubbed a two RBI single to give Sugar Land the lead they would never relinquish.

 

Jeremy Barfield, who is second in the Atlantic League in RBI, tallied an RBI sacrifice fly in the second inning to up the lead to 3-1.

 

Connor Little came into relief in the fourth inning and gave up a run via a wild pitch and another via a balk.

 

Sugar Land added its final run in the fifth when Ricky Hague blasted a solo home run (7) to make the score 6-1.

 

Somerset scored on a passed ball in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 6-2, which would be the final.

 

Mickey Storey, pitching for the first time in three weeks after nursing a sore right arm, suffered the loss (1-4). He yielded three runs in three innings of work. Jake Hale notched the win (1-1) as he went the distance allowing two runs in seven innings.

 

Game Two Recap

 

Josh Prince laced an RBI walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning as Sugar Land edged Somerset 4-3 in game two of the doubleheader.

 

The Patriots got off to a great start as Mycal Jones belted a home run (2) on the third pitch of the game.

 

“I’ve been putting a lot of pressure on myself to get the team going in the first inning,” remarked the leadoff hitter Jones. “It seems like if I don’t get going early then we don’t get going until a lot later. I was just trying to lock in and start something and I drove that ball.”

 

Vinny Zarrillo sliced a single in the next inning as Somerset took a 2-0 advantage.

 

The Skeeters scored three times with two outs in the home half of the inning to grab a brief 3-2 lead. Wilfredo Rodriguez pounded a two RBI double while Prince ripped an RBI single.

 

Jones added an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth to even the score at 3-3.

 

Both bullpens were used heavily as the teams combined to use 13 different pitchers.

 

Robbie Weinhardt earned the win (5-4). Brandon Sisk, who also threw in game one, suffered the  loss (1-3).
