Sky Blue FC boosts offensive game with signing of NJ native Daphne Corboz

Today, Sky Blue FC (SBFC) announced the signing of midfielder Daphne Corboz for the 2017 season.  She was originally selected by the team as the 22^nd overall pick in 2015.  However, Corboz went on to commit to Manchester City.  The Manchester City Blues won their first FA Women’s Super League title in September. The Blues would overcome Birmingham City 1-0 to win the Continental Cup Final just seven days later.

“We are delighted to have signed Daphne Corboz,” said head coach Christy Holly, in the Sky Blue FC media release. “She is going to be a key piece to what we are trying to achieve over the next number of seasons, and she is an attractive player to us for many reasons. For starters, she is a New Jersey girl and has a full appreciation of what it means to wear the Sky Blue FC crest. She is someone who brings a huge amount of qualities on the field, and she also has a great personality off the field as well.”

Growing up in New Jersey, Daphne played with the Players Development Academy (PDA) the U.S Soccer Girls Development Academy partner of Sky Blue FC.  “Bringing Daphne into our club is especially gratifying because I have personally known her and the Corboz family for quite some time,” shared Sky Blue FC President & General Manager, Tony Novo. “It has been fantastic to watch her development throughout the years, both as a player and a person.” Growing up, Corboz watched her favorite female player Carli Lloyd play on Yurcak Field, as part of the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights.  Now she will call Yurcak her home as a member of Sky Blue FC.

In 2011, Corboz went on to play for Georgetown University, starting all 21 games her freshman season.  She ended her career with 80 starts in 82 appearances, and tallied 47 goals and 41 assists for 134 career points.  To date, she remains the highest goal scorer in the history of the program.  Her success on the pitch might have to do with her genes.

The New Jersey native comes from a family of soccer players. Her father played in France for Grenoble before moving to the United States.  Daphne’s brother Mael also played Division I soccer, and her sister Rachel, just completed her third season at Georgetown University.

Holly will likely look to Corboz to help orchestrate the SBFC offense.  With strikers like Natasha Kai, Leah Galton and Maya Hayes, Corboz will have plenty of targets as a midfielder.  Her ability to score will also open up the Sky Blue offense for other attacking players like defender Kelley O’Hara and fellow midfielder Raquel Rodriguez.
