UConn shows no effort in blow out loss against Boise State

Yikes.  It’s not even worth doing a “Good” and “Bad” breakdown of the Connecticut Huskies game last night because the only positive thing to come out of it was that it ended.

In all seriousness, David Pindell’s tenacity was about the only positive to come out of this terrible effort by the Huskies, as he was under fire all game and kept fighting for extra yards.  Without him, this game could have been 100-0.

The Huskies set all kinds of records Saturday night, none of them good. They lost the game 62-7, which is the typical score of an Alabama vs Hampton game.  They were down 24-0 after the first quarter and 41-0 at the half.  As soon as Boise State stepped on the field, the game was essentially over.

Boise State scored at will against a young and quite frankly pathetic Husky defense.  They had 820 yards total in the game, 514 in the first half.  They also scored on every single one of their first nine drives.  On the flip side, UConn totaled 78 yards of offense and didn’t score their first points until the third quarter.

The Huskies have now been outscored 118-24 by Boise State and UCF, two ranked opponents.  You obviously knew UConn never had a shot in these games, but it’s disheartening to see the lack of effort.

Kevin Mensah carried the ball ten times for 82 yards, Pindell was 11/21 for just 71 yards, and the star of UConn on this day was punter Luke Magliozzi, who punted the ball nine times for 432 yards.  It was about as ugly an effort as you’ll see this season and the Huskies just need to be better.

It may be too early to tell, but maybe Randy Edsall coming back to the Huskies was the wrong move.  There clearly seems to be a lack of communication from coaches to players, and despite the lack of talent on the team the biggest issue is with the inconsistent effort this team puts out from play to play.

UConn’s next game is Saturday, September 15 against Rhode Island.  They’ll be home against a lesser opponent, so if they buckle down this week in practice and string together consistent effort, they may have a chance in this game.  Until then, the biggest hindrance on the UConn Husky football team will be their own lack of effort.
