Uncategorized Somerset Patriots Re-Sign RHP Kyler Newby by Somerset Patriots February 19, 2016 Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots have announced the re-signing of right-handed pitcher Kyler Newby. “I am excited for the opportunity to come back to Somerset and pitch again,” Newby said. “I look forward to seeing all of my teammates and all the fans again. It will be fun to defend our championship.” Newby returns to the Somerset Patriots for his third season with the team. Last year, he went 8-4 with a 4.09 ERA and two saves over 49 relief appearances. Additionally, Newby tossed two shutout innings over three appearances during the postseason en route to an Atlantic League championship. The Las Vegas, Nevada native appeared in 11 games with the Somerset Patriots in 2014, tossing 11 innings of shutout relief while recording one save. He later had his contract purchased by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake, where he carried a 3.98 ERA over 30 appearances (two starts). Newby owns an 8-4 record with a 3.41 ERA and three saves over 60 relief appearances in his two seasons with the Somerset Patriots. “Kyler is a huge addition to our pitching staff and provides that necessary leadership on and off the field,” manager Brett Jodie said. “He excels in many roles as a pitcher and we look forward to having that versatility prove true again this season. Newby has dominant stuff and we have the utmost confidence in him in tough situations.” The Mesa Community College alum has 11 years of service across the minor leagues, including stints in the Arizona Diamondbacks, Baltimore Orioles, Oakland Athletics and Angels organizations. He reached Triple-A in all four organizations: 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively. Newby also received a call up to the Major Leagues with Arizona in 2011, but did not end up pitching in a game. The 2004 Diamondbacks draft pick owns a 47-32 record with a 3.22 ERA, 66 saves and 708 strikeouts over 662.2 innings pitched in 400 career appearances (31 starts).
