Somerset Patriots Sign 1B/3B Matt Oberste

Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots have signed infielder Matt Oberste for the 2018 season.

Oberste enters his first season with the Somerset Patriots and first in the Atlantic League. He has spent the first six years of his professional career in the New York Mets organization, including two games with the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s earlier this season. After beginning 2018 in Las Vegas, the 26 year-old played in 61 games with the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies. There, Oberste hit six home runs with 20 RBI. 

The Fort Smith, Arkansas native was originally drafted by the Mets in the seventh round of the 2013 draft from the University of Oklahoma. Oberste set career highs in batting (.301) and RBI (64) in 2015 with the High-A St. Lucie Mets and hit a career-best nine home runs in 2016 in Binghamton. He batted .284 in Binghamton last year with five home runs and 62 RBI over 129 games.

Oberste was named a Florida State League Post-Season All-Star in 2015 and an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star in 2016. He was also selected as the 2016 Eastern League All-Star Game MVP after finishing the game 4-for-5 with a double and four RBI.

The first baseman/ third baseman put up big numbers in his two years at Oklahoma. Oberste posted a .373 average with 11 home runs and 60 RBI over 64 games in his junior year and earned All-America honors from the NCBWA (First Team), Baseball America (Second Team) and Collegiate Baseball (Third Team. He was also named to the All Big 12 First Team that year.

Oberste has hit .266 with 37 home runs with 271 RBI over his six-year professional career.
