Basketball Spike Lee continues to purchase the Knicks memorabilia by Stefano Bentivogli October 7, 2019 The collection of Spike Lee’s New York Knicks memorabilia continues to grow. The memorabilia is offered for sale by the family of coach Red Holzman, coach of the NBA champion Knickerbockers in 1970 and 1973. Lee managed to win, for over $69,000, the retina of one of the Madison Square Garden baskets, the ones that welcomed the two shots of the injured Willis Reed in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA finals, which gave Walt Frazier’s Knicks the charge to beat the Los Angeles Lakers. For about $31,000 Spike Lee also bought the coach of the year award, awarded to Holzman for the 1969-70 season. Game 7 on May 8th, 1970 has a special meaning for Lee, who at the age of 13 attended the game in the stands of Madison Square Garden. “A moment I will never forget, Willis Reed returning to the court and the Garden going crazy. A historic moment”. The memorabilia auction grossed nearly $320,000, with the most expensive NBA Red Holzman ring from 1970 sold for $107,000. The two titles of the ’70 and ’73 are the last two won by the New York Knicks. They would return to the Finals two more times in 1994 and 1999, losing to Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs. Game 7 of the 1970 NBA finals was voted by ESPN in 2010 as the most beautiful game in the history of the NBA Finals, and was decided by the historic 36-point performance, 19 assists and 6 rebounds by Walt “Clyde” Frazier, former Knicks point guard , Hall of Famer and commentator for MSG Network.
