St. John’s Lands German forward Richard Freudenberg

St. John’s Men’s Basketball and Head Coach Chris Mullin haven’t had the best rebuild year losing 13 straight games and being 0-10 in the Big East, but that doesn’t stop Mullin’s powerful ways of landing top recruits.

Richard Freudenberg, a native of Germany, committed to St. John’s Thursday morning. Freudenberg is a 6-foot-8 forward and chose the Red Storm over Vanderbilt, Boston College, and Miami. He has played two games in the past for Bayern Munich in Germany’s top division. He also had options to sign a contract to play professionally in Europe, but opted out to be able to play college ball.

He averaged 14.3 points and 8.0 rebounds for Bayern Munich’s under-18 team in the 2014-2915 EuroLeague. Freudenberg also took part in the U18 FIBA Europe Championship in 2015, representing Germany. He averaged 5.0 points and 2.8 rebounds. Sources have said that Freudenberg would be considered a top-40-caliber player if he was in America.

St. John ‘s currently has six international players on the roster including, Federico Mussini (Italy), Ron Mvouika (France), Felix Balamou (Guinea), Amar Alibegovic (Italy), Kassoum Yakwe (Mali), and Yankuba Sima (Spain). Along with Freudenberg, the Red Storm’s 2016-2017 recruiting class includes Shamorie Ponds, No. 36 of 100 ESPN guard and a top JuCo student, Bashir Ahmed. St. John’s will also regain the talents of Marcus LoVett Jr., who had to sit the 2015-2016 season.

Five-star recruits Rawle Alkins and Thou Maker are also on the radar for St. John’s radar. Both recently visited campus.
