St. John’s To Face Syracuse For the 91st Edition Dec. 21 At Carrier Dome

Announced August 16, St. John’s will continue it’s long-lived rivalry against Syracuse for their 91st time in history, taking place December 21 at the Carrier Dome.

St. John’s has won over Syracuse in the previous two games against each other, including last year’s 84-72 victory against the Final Four bound Orange on Dec. 13 at Madison Square Garden. St. John’s makes its first trip back to the Carrier Dome since beating Syracuse in the away game back on December 6, 2014, 69-57, before a crowd of 24,884. The records read 51-39, Syracuse, in the series that began during the 1911-12 season.

St. John’s ranks ninth, along with Syracuse ranking fifth on the NCAA’s all-time wins list with 1,803 and 1,920 victories, respectively. Also, Both of the schools’ programs are in the top-10 for all-time winning percentage and have combined for 66 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Coach Chris Mullin returns for his second season for the Red Storm with a young roster with players having both experience and talent. Rising sophomores Federico Mussini, Malik Ellison, Yankuba Sima and Kassoum Yakwe, All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selection,  who will complement the newcomers this season. The four players all played key minutes for the Red Storm in 2015-16, combining for nearly 40 percent of the team’s scoring, rebounding and assists.

First-year players Bashir Ahmed, Shamorie Ponds, and Richard Freudenberg will make their Johnnie debuts as well as Marcus LoVett and Tariq Owens who had both sat out last season due to NCAA regulations.
