Last night, St. John’s played in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament, in the second game of the doubleheader, against Marquette at Madison Square Garden.

Although the 2015-16 campaign for the Red Storm came to an end with a 101-93 loss to the Golden Eagles, St. John’s showed everyone how far they have come throughout the season, almost beating Marquette.

The Red Storm came back from a 17-point deficit to go up one with only 3:15 left on the clock but Golden Eagles superstar player Henry Ellenson fought back with a 3-pointer and Marquette was holding on strong. Ellenson finished with a double-double, scoring 27 points and 14 rebounds.

A record was made for Christian Jones who had an outstanding career-high of 29 points, shooting 13-of-21 from the field for the Red Storm. Federico Mussini scored 15 points and made all six free-throw attempts, Durand Johnson put up 13 points and Malik Ellison added 10 points, making it St. John’s second-highest scoring performance of the season.

Marquette went right into the game with an early lead, shooting 63.0 percent in the first half. They had a 50-38 advantage at halftime. Helping the Golden Eagles was Haanif Cheatham who added 12 of his 19 points in the first 20 minutes.

With 11:46 left in the second half, after falling behind 75-58, the Red Storm used a 31-13 run within the next nine minutes to have a one point lead. Ron Mvouika put up the 3-pointer that would put St. John’s up 89-88. But just 15 seconds later, Ellenson fired back with a triple. Marquette sealed the win with eight of their final 10 points coming from the free-throw line.

Jajuan Johnson gave the Golden Eagles 23 points, while both Luke Fisher (10) and Duane Wilson (14), also scored double-figures.
