Surging Blue Claws beat Delmarva 5-2

They may have had a quiet start to the season, but the red-hot Lakewood BlueClaws have won seven of their last 10 games after posting a 5-2 victory over Delmarva on Friday night.

Both teams came firing out of the gate early, and it was the Shorebirds that had a 2-1 lead after the first inning.

The score stayed that way until the 4th when Lakewood exploded for three runs, taking a 4-2 lead.  Four BlueClaws players had at least one RBI, but the Claws could have done much more damage, leaving a staggering 14 runners on base.

In the top of the 8th inning, the BlueClaws added an insurance run to increase their lead to 5-2.

The win lifted the BlueClaws record to 8-7 and dropped the Shorebirds to 11-4 after suffering back-to-back loses at home.

Lakewood got five strong innings from starter Spencer Howard who had great command of his pitches, allowing just 2 runs in the first while tallying 9 strikeouts.  Matthias Dietz suffered his first loss of the season moving his record to 2-1. Spencer was credited with his first win of the season.

Zach Warren earned his first hold and Randy Alcantana got his first save of the 2018 campaign for the Claws.  The Shorebirds left eight runners on base and Delmarva’s Zach Jarret hit the only home run of the game.

The two teams meet again Saturday night for a 7:05pm game under the lights.  Damon Jones (1-1) takes the mound for Lakewood and Delmarva counters with Brenan Hanifee (1-1).

Having won the first two games of the four-game series, the BlueClaws coaches and players are thinking “sweep” but will need a win tonight to keep those hopes alive.
