Tennis: Murray’s Hip Surgery a Success

Andy Murray has recently undergone surgery for a hip issue, which should with any luck allow him to compete at Wimbledon this summer. The surgery was carried out in Melbourne, Australia, and it is possible that Murray will be able to pick up his career where he left off, at the end of a 37 week run as the best player in the world. Dr. John O’Donnell, one of the best hip surgeons in the world, carried out the operation. He was happy with the outcome, as is Murray, who hope to continue competing in:

  • Wimbledon
  • Australian Open
  • Olympics

Murray had to cancel his appearance at the Brisbane International, and many though that he was planning on flying home to London. He is due to be fit to fly within a couple of weeks, and is set to return to his home. Unfortunately, it looks unlikely that he will be present at the Australian Open. Overwork and stubbornness have contributed to his hip issues, and Murray has expressed a desire to reduce his current workload, in order to make his career last longer.

Less Work Is Lined up for the Future

He aims to reduce the amount of tournaments that he commits to, and put together a schedule that provides him with some more time to himself. He plans to focus more on trying to win big events and tournaments, and reduce the amount of smaller events he participates in. Hopefully, he’ll be present for the grass-court season, but the current focus has to be on correct rehab. Without the right amount of time put in, combined with correct physio, he would not be able to make the most out of the successful operation. However, assuming that he stays relaxed for the full fourteen weeks that have been recommended by his doctor, he should be able to guarantee a full recovery.

Murray Has Been Forced to Pass on Multiple Tournaments

He seems determined to ensure that he is fit to play, and doesn’t have to pull out of a competition. In Brisbane, he had to cancel before actually going on the court. Similarly, in New York he was forced to pull out once the US Open draw had been completed. It was an unfortunate situation, and not one that he wishes to repeat. As a result, Murray is determined to make sure that he is one hundred percent ready to play when he looks at returning to the sport.

Fortunately, he seems confident that he should be back in action soon enough. It’s a major turnaround compared to the situation in the near past. There seemed a real possibility that has career was not due to recover, with six months having passed since his last big competitive match. That took place at Wimbledon, where he lost against Sam Querrey in the quarter finals.

Murray initially began his consultations with O’Donnell in 2008 due to some minor issues with his hip. While he initially rejected the idea of surgery, he changed his mind after a good deal of consideration. The mental and physical tiredness that his hip issues were bringing on were having a major effect on his playing. With the correct management, he should be fine to return to the sport.
