Baseball The Brodie Van Wagenen Era for the Mets set to begin Tuesday afternoon What will be said during Van Wagenen’s first legitimate major league press conference? by Daniel Yanofsky October 30, 2018 Ready or not, here comes Brodie. The Mets will be going from negotiating deals with Brodie Van Wagenen to putting him in charge of all things baseball. A press conference is scheduled for today (Tuesday, Oct. 30) afternoon to announce the signing of the newest GM of the Mets. Mets COO Jeff Wilpon had the following to say about the newest addition to the team: “Brodie is an extremely knowledgeable, creative, progressive and collaborative leader, who I’m confident will lead us toward sustainable success. I’m very excited for our fans to hear and see the direction Brodie outlined for us.” While his knowledge in baseball comes down to representing several MLB players, including members of the Mets’ roster, Van Wagenen’s savvy business skills caught the eye of Mets brass. CEO and Chairman of the Board Fred Wilpon added on to Jeff’s comments, stating: “Brodie showed us he is a progressive thinker, who is prepared for this role and has great baseball acumen. Jeff brought forward an array of candidates and we all agreed that Brodie’s high character, blend of analytics, scouting and development ideas illustrate why he will be successful in this role.” When it came to Sandy Alderson’s replacement, Van Wagenen was the Wilpon’s guy all along. His methodical approach to dealing with MLB brass, especially as an agent, enticed them enough to make him the lead candidate. What can Mets fan expect from this new era? Numbers will definitely be valuable, including money. While the Wilpon’s have been less than willing to break the bank in recent years, having Van Wagenen aboard might change all of that. It is not uncommon for agents to take on a high-profile role in baseball. It has worked out in Golden State with Bob Myers of the Wasserman Media Group. In the MLB, Dave Stewart and Jeff Moorad come to mind. Baseball is a different animal than anywhere else, and for the latter two names, it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows. How will Van Wagenen answer questions from a brass of media that is always to the point? Will he surprise us all by having a distinct plan right from the get-go and stick to it? Jumping into the unknown, all eyes will be on the Mets once again and their new GM. You can watch the press conference, which starts at 2:30 p.m. ET, exclusively on MLB.com and mets.com.
