Feature The Jets get busy in free agency by Chris Passarelli March 12, 2019 The New York Jets have a lot of work to do with a new coaching staff and a lot of holes on their roster. However, they’re off to a good start with both their free agent signings and their trades. Although Anthony Barr spurned them for a new contract with the Minnesota Vikings, his absence frees up some more money for holes to be plugged. Let’s take a look at their signings so far; Jets acquire OG Kelechi Osemele from Raiders The first move the Jets made was a great one, trading their fifth round pick for a sixth round pick and former Pro-Bowl and All-Pro offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele. Osemele plugs a big hole in what has been a makeshift line for the Jets. As the Jets have tons of cap space and the free agent market for guards is weak, it made all the sense in the world for this marriage to happen. Osemele is a natural born leader, an absolute hog molly, and will help protect the young but up and coming Sam Darnold. Jets sign free agent WR Jamison Crowder The Jets most definitely overpaid for the young receiver formerly of the Redskins. However, the combination of Robbie Anderson and Crowder provides MAJOR speed for the Jets and their young quarterback. It’s good that the Jets went out and got more help at wide receiver. Now they have Crowder, Anderson, Herndon, and hopefully a healthy Enunwa. If they can go out and sign Tevin Coleman and use that free Anthony Barr money to shore up the O-Line and defense, it’s a great deal for them. The three year contract worth $28M is steep, but it’s the price to pay for someone with a lot of potential. Plus the fact that Crowder has never had a great quarterback throwing to him could be what gives him a breakout year. Jets sign free agent LB CJ Mosley The prize of the Jets free agency class so far was supposed to be Anthony Barr but he spurned the Jets after originally agreeing to signing with them. He went back to Minnesota, but the Jets still got plenty of help at LB, signing the standout from Baltimore CJ Mosley. Mosley is one of the best linebackers in the game and the Jets are happy to have him. Mosley can do just about everything and will add some seriously needed veteran leadership on the Jets defense. If Mosley can prove to be even the same player he was on Baltimore, he’s a dog. He’s exactly the kind of player Jamal Adams was asking for when he was recruiting essentially every player in the NFL to the Jets. The Jets have done a great job so far at filling holes in their roster. They still have a lot of work to do, but with a new receiver in Crowder, some offensive line help, and having a Pro-Bowl linebacker in Mosley, they’re doing a great job so far. If they can snag Le’Veon Bell or choose a cheaper option in Tevin Coleman, they’ll be in a great position to compete for a division title. Of course that rides on the progess of Sam Darnold, the other signings that take place, and the New England Patriots but if you were to take a look at the Jets roster now as compared to last season, they’re much more talented and they’re ready to compete.
