Basketball The Knicks absolutely cannot make the same mistake twice by Chris Passarelli February 12, 2019 This upcoming offseason will prove to be perhaps the most monumental in New York Knicks history. They are coming off one of their biggest trades in franchise history, getting rid of Kristaps Porzingis, Courtney Lee, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Trey Burke. They essentially traded all away for cap space and two future first round picks. This puts the Knicks in a good position cap wise for the first time in what feels like forever. Now, the first part is done but the Knicks absolutely cannot let this opportunity slip away. They have a chance to become an instant contended with the signing on any combination of Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant. They also have a chance to put themselves back in cap hell, depending on who they sign. They made the mistake once of going after Lebron James and failing miserably in signing him. Instead, they settled for an aging and injury prone Am’are Stoudemire, traded for a great scorer but terrible fit in Carmelo Anthony, and the furthest the Knicks got was the second round of the playoffs during their tenure. The worst thing the Knicks can possibly do is make that same mistake again. If they wind up giving max deals to Kemba Walker, Jimmy Butler, Tobias Harris, or anyone other than the top three free agents, they’ll find themselves back in that spot. Sure they’re all great players, but they aren’t championship players and the Knicks will pay dearly for it. Would you rather see the Knicks be bad for another two years or have them sneak into the playoffs as a six or seven seed and lose in five games to the 76ers or Celtics? Would you rather be patient with an extremely young and talented team or try to rush the process and put more band aids on a broken team. If the Knicks fail to capitalize on this opportunity they may never get out of this hole. Let’s hope that Scott Perry and Steve Mills know what they’re doing. If not it’s going to be another long Knicks season next year.
