For those of you who do not know the Las Vegas 51s, formerly known as the Las Vegas Stars, are a Minor League Baseball team playing in the Pacific Coast League (PCL) and the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets.  Several major league players, including New York Mets’ Jacob deGrom, Wilmer Flores, and Lucas Duda played for the 51s.

Today is Opening Day at Cashman Field, which is where the Las Vegas 51s make their home.  Manager, Pedro Lopez, has high hopes for the team and many fans will be attending the game to cheer for tomorrow’s stars.  The team got its name from Area 51, which is located near Rachel, Nevada and a good 80 miles north of Las Vegas.  Cosmo, the team mascot is a friendly alien, and a bit more inviting than the alien depicted on the team logo.  Speaking of the team logo, it’s been updated to commemorate the 35th season.

Tonight the team will host the Fresno Grizzlies, the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros at 7:05 p.m.  So far the 51s have won two and lost three while on the road, so tonight’s game, if they come out on top will put them at .500.  The 51s have the distinction of being the longest-running professional sports team in the state of Nevada. Many of the Vegas-locals are transplants from New York, and there will is little doubt there will be a full-house in the stands tonight.

Many are talking about how Tim Tebow might end up showing up here in Vegas and if that happens it will give fans one more reason be one more reason to smile.  Only, the team does not need Tim to come out on the right side, tonight.  It just needs to show up ready, play to the best of its ability and look to perform to the caliber its capable of.  Everyone knows these kids can play, now it’s just up to the team to connect the pieces under its new manager and show everyone they have what it takes to be amazing!
