Feature Thunder Split With Portland; Win Streak Stopped at Nine by Staff Post May 29, 2011 The Trenton Thunder (29-19) won the first game of a twinbill against the Portland Seadogs (14-32) to extend their season high win streak to nine games by a score of 8-7. But the Thunder dropped the nightcap 7-5. In the first game the Thunder fell behind early in the contest as the SeaDog’s Ryan Lavarnway hit a three run homer in the first inning to start Portland off to a 3-0 lead. The Thunder came back with a couple runs of their own in the third inning with a Cody Johnson two run blast to dead center to cut the deficit to 3-2. Both teams scored a run in the next inning to make the score 4-3 Seadogs, But in the fifth inning the Thunder Jose Pirela tripled off the left field wall and scored on a Addison Maruszak sacrifice fly that tied the score at five apiece. With two on and two outs Corban Joseph smacked a double driving two runs home and giving Trenton the 7-5 lead. After scoring another run the Thunder the Seadogs scored two more runs to make the score 8-7 Thunder going into the final frame. Pitcher Josh Schimdt was called in to close out the Seadogs and secure Trenton’s ninth straight win. Thunder Pitcher Wilkens Arias (2-0, 2.35) was credited with the victory with Josh Schimdt getting his fifth save of the season. In game 2 the Thunder quickly staked a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Jose Gil and Addison Maruszak . But the Seadogs blasted Thunder starting pitcher Cory Arbiso for seven runs in the second inning to claim a 7-2 lead. The Thunder picked at the Seadog lead by scoring runs in the third and fifth innings to cut the Seadog lead to 7-5, but the Thunder comeback fell short. Thunder pitcher Cory Arbiso (3-2, 5.87) was tagged with the loss. Thunder Claps The Thunder continue with the fourth game of a five game set against the Portland Seadogs in a 1:00 pm tilt this afternoon.
