Top five matches from the G1 Supercard

Now that WrestleMania weekend has ended, it is time to reflect on all of the great wrestling that took place From Thursday to Tuesday. While there were many events taking place on Saturday night, the G1 Supercard was a show fans were extremely interested in. Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling collaborated on an event that may have changed the landscape of pro wrestling.

The PPV inside Madison Square Garden in New York, it was being treated as a big deal, and rightly so. No other organization besides WWE can say they’ve held an event inside MSG.

There were plenty of moments to remember from the card, including Jushin Thunder Liger facing off against The Great Muta. It was the matches that many will never forget. Here are a list of the top matches that took place inside The World’s Most Famous Arena.

Matt Taven defeated Jay Lethal and Marty Scurll

A ROH-produced match for the Ring of Honor World Title, adding ladders to match truly gave it a special MSG-like vibe. Jay Lethal wanted to enter MSG as the ROH World Champion, and the New Jersey native got his wish.

This match was full of crazy spots to get the crowd excited in the middle of the great show. At one point, two ladders were put together and formed an X. Eventually it was taken out of the ring but accidentally hit fans in the front trow, promoting a “That’s A Lawsuit” chant. In the end, Matt Taven finally achieved his destiny and won the title. While the crowd booed the decision, there is no secret that if it wasn’t a result of his gimmick, he would be cheered.

Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa) (IWGP) defeated Villain Enterprises (PCO and Brody King) (ROH), Los Ingobernables de Japon (Evil and Sanada) and The Briscoe Brothers (Jay Briscoe and Mark Briscoe)

If the post-match hijinks involving Enzo Amore and Big Cass wasn’t your thing, that is completely fine. The match that happened before then was well worth the view. Originally just a match between G.O.D. and The Briscoes, the other teams were added for more carnage. And carnage there was.

EVIL and SANDA work great with any team they are in the ring with, as do The Briscoes. Brody King was able to show why he is a star in the making, while PCO proved he was a true freak of nature. Tonga and Loa ended up winning the bout, becoming both IWGP and ROH World Tag Team Champions. The tag team landscape in ROH got more complicated thanks to the Bullet Club win.

Dragon Lee defeated Taiji Ishimori (c) and Bandido

This was for Ishimori’s IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. At a certain point, the show was dragging on a bit. What better way to wake people up than with this match? Dragon Lee, Ishimori and Bandido put on a show inside MSG, full of memorable flips and twists. Ishimori’s run as champion was impressive, but Dragon Lee needed the win, even if some found it shocking. He still has some business with the man he injured all those months ago, Hiromu Takahashi.

As always, Bandido is a treat to watch. One of the best signings Ring of Honor has had in a while.

Jeff Cobb (c) def. Will Ospreay (c)

Another champion v. champion match. The first bout on the main card had the job of getting the crowd pumped up, and boy did it ever. Cobb, the ROH TV Champion, is a freak of nature that was shown during his time in Lucha Underground. Will Ospreay, the NEVER Openweight Champion, went through a lot to get to this moment. Both ended up exceeding expectations in one of the biggest matches of their careers.

For a big man, Cobb can move like he is a cruiserweight, while Ospreay has proven to be the best athlete in the world today. Do yourself a favor and watch this match many times, as it will wow you with every single view. Cobb defeated Ospreay to be a double champion but everyone was a winner here.

Kota Ibushi defeated Tetsuya Naito

The best match of the night and of WrestleMania weekend. Both Ibushi and Naito are two of the best New Japan Pro Wrestling has to offer and they did not disappoint. This was for Naito’s Intercontinental Title, something Ibushi never won before. There really isn’t much to say about this match except if you didn’t watch it, you were truly missing out.
