College UConn defense fails them again in wild shootout by Chris Passarelli November 12, 2018 If David Pindell could play defense, the UConn Huskies football team would probably not be 1-9. Unfortunately, the captain, leader, and quarterback of the Huskies cannot play both sides of the ball, and his defense let him down once again in a 62-50 loss to SMU. It was most certainly a better effort from the team in general, but man this defense has more holes in it than swiss cheese. Giving up 62 points and 594 yards overall, UConn just could not make a stop when they needed to. David Pindell and Kevin Mensah lit it up on offense. Pindell completed 25 of 38 passes for 215 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 100+ yards once again, scampering for 181 yards. Kevin Mensah ran for a career high 184 yards and was consistently breaking tackles. As many tackles as Pindell and Mensah broke, it was about half the amount that SMU broke. The UConn defense flailed their arms at the SMU running backs, didn’t wrap up when they tried to tackle, and left wide open holes both in the running game and passing game. The effort was there last week, but the defense was not. Will the Huskies put together a full game by the end of the season? Perhaps. But for now all UConn fans can do is sit there and enjoy the high-octane offense and porous defense.
