College UConn downs #1 South Carolina by Staff Post February 11, 2015 (Photo Courtesy Robert Stowell, Jr./UConn) It was supposed to be one of the best games of the entire NCAA women’s basketball season. The #2 University of Connecticut Huskies were hosting the #1 and undefeated South Carolina Gamecocks. What was expected to be a game that went down to the finish wound up being over by the beginning of the second half. The Huskies dominated the Gamecocks and went on to upset the #1 team in the county by a score of 87-62. The meeting between 1 and 2 was the 54th in women’s basketball history. UConn sophomore forward Breanna Steward contributed the Huskies win with 22 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Legendary UConn head coach Geno Auriemma has a feeling this is not the last time the Huskies and Gamecocks will meet this season. ”They are going to be playing deep into the NCAA tournament,” said Auriemma. “I told (South Carolina head coach) Dawn (Staley), I hope we play them in Tampa. That would be pretty special.” The NCAA Women’s Final Four, and the National Championship, will be played from April 5th-7th at the Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay, Florida. Have we just witnessed a National Championship preview? Will it all come down to South Carolina-UConn once again? March Madness will tell all.
