MMA UFC 196: McGregor Taps; Holly Choked Out by Jason Cordner March 6, 2016 Nate Diaz (L) punches Conor McGregor during UFC 196 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on March 5, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Rey Del Rio/Getty Images) UFC 196 is officially behind us. Nate Diaz upset Conor McGregor in the night’s main event, earning the submission victory in Round 2 of their welterweight showdown. Diaz rocked McGregor with several shots in the second round, taking advantage of things when McGregor hit the canvas and securing a rear-naked choke. On the list of things that could’ve gone wrong for McGregor, getting choked by Nate Diaz was perhaps the least surprising. What we know now is this: Conor McGregor should stay away from 170 lbs. Diaz is a fairly weak welterweight compared to the top of the division. Robbie Lawler would take years off McGregor’s life if they fought. Where could the Irishman be best? Lightweight. And that’s where he should probably fight next, but is he worthy of a title shot in another weight division in the face of getting stopped in the second round? I say no. McGregor should focus on 145. Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo, those are the guys that should be on the tip of his tongue, and if he can make the weight without risking his health this is where he should focus himself the rest of 2016. Miesha Tate captured the bantamweight title in the evening’s co-main event, submitting Holly Holm with 1:30 remaining in the final round of a bout she was likely losing on the scorecards. Tate becomes the division’s third champion after handing Holm the first loss of her career. Tate, who almost finished the fight in the second round, didn’t let the choke go this time. Holm refused to tap in her first title defense. Where does the UFC goes from here? Will Conor go back down to 145? Will Holly get a rematch with Miesha,or will we see Holly vs Ronda 2 first. This is why UFC is great. Everything is always subject to change.
