UFC 206: Daniel Cormier out of the main event due to injury

Luck has not been on Daniel Cormier’s side the past few months. MMA Fighting has confirmed that Cormier (18-1) will not defend his Light Heavyweight Title against Anthony Johnson (22-5) at UFC 206 due to an injury that has not been specified. The event takes place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on December 10th.

Cormier last fought at UFC 200 in Las Vegas, Nevada against Anderson Silva. His original opponent, Jon “Bones” Jones, had to withdraw due to a doping violation. Cormier tweeted out a sincere apology to the UFC community and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.

Although the UFC is having a great year, this is another minor setback for the promotion. According to USA Today’s Mike Bohn, this is the 33rd main or co-main event change to the UFC fight calendar in 2016. UFC officials are currently looking for a main event to replace the fight, but are still hoping Anthony Johnson fights on the card. The co-main event is Anthony Pettis vs. Max Holloway, while the card also features Donald Cerrone vs. Matt Brown and Cub Swanson vs. Doo Ho Choi. With a card like that, it shouldn’t be a problem for the UFC to make a profit.

After the announcement was made, there were rumors that the UFC has been in contact with Georges St-Pierre. Unfortunately, it may just remain a rumor. Pettis/Holloway could be for the interim lightweight title, according to Ariel Helwani. The hope is that Cormier’s injury will not derail him for a long period of time.

With plenty of time left until UFC 206, the there are endless amounts of backup plans in motion. Hopefully, this fight will be the only one that needs an alteration.
