After a slow ending to 2016 in the New York boxing scene, 2017 is set to start off strong despite the many obstacles boxing has encountered in the last year.

Undefeated boxing champions Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia are set to go to battle in an unification welterweight title fight in the main event of Showtime Championship Boxing on Saturday, March 4th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Thurman has held the WBA welterweight title since 2013. Garcia won the WBC welterweight title last year.

For only the second time in 40 years, the main card will air live during prime time on CBS at 9pm EST/6pm PST.

“This fight is going to have action,” said Thurman (27-0, 22KOs) at a press conference held at the Barclays Center Wednesday. “There’s too much on the line. I remember Danny from the amateurs. I applaud him for everything he’s done in this career. He signed the wrong contract though, because Keith Thurman’s got this. Danny Garcia, you’re getting knocked out.”

“Angel will talk to try to get people off of their game. Danny is an elite fighter, and he can talk for himself,” Thurman reacting to Garcia’s father and trainer, Angel Garcia’s antics at the presser. “These father trainers seem to like the limelight as much as the fighter, if not more. At the end of the day, I’m only fighting Danny Garcia.”

“Thurman is a good fighter and he’s been around for a long time like Danny. I respect him, but they made him a champion,” said Angel confidently the media. “Danny became a champion, and there is a difference. Danny is a true champion. March 4 he will still be undefeated. Thurman won’t have an answer for Danny.”

“At the end of the day he’s a world champion and you have to respect that.,” said Garcia (33-0, 19KOs) of his opponent. “He’s nothing I haven’t seen before. I’ve been fighting people like him since I was a little kid in Philadelphia. I’ve been boxing my whole life for this moment. I just have to go in there and make sure I’m ready mentally and physically.”

Since word first spread of this mega-fight in November, fans have been anxiously waiting for the official bout announcement and tickets to be released. Garcia holds the attendence record and was the first headliner at the Brooklyn venue. With Thurman as his opponent, this is expected to sell out quickly.

“We’re talking about world class championship boxing at its best, March 4 will be that, and more,” said Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment CEO, Brett Yormark. “This is the best welterweight fight of the year, with two spectacular undefeated fighters.”
