Undisputed: Katie Taylor To Face Delfine Persoon for Lightweight Glory

It was only a few days ago when Claressa Shields defeated Christina Hammer to become the first woman in the modern era to become an undisputed champion. That was in the middleweight division. Now, the lightweight division will get a chance to make history.

Katie Taylor, the WBA, WBO and IBF Lightweight Champion, will face WBC Champion Delfine Persoon for all of the gold. The Ring Magazine Lightweight Title will also be on the line. The fight will take place on June 1st inside Madison Square Garden, exclusively on DAZN. The main event of that Matchroom Boxing card will be Anthony Joshua v. Jarrell Miller.

It has been a big two years for Taylor (13-0), who fought four times in 2018. The former Olympic medalist defeated Rose Volante via TKO back in March to win the WBO Lightweight Title. One of the fastest-rising stars in the game today, Taylor has managed to gather a massive following after winning WBA gold in her seventh pro fight. This will be Taylor’s second fight inside MSG and fourth in New York.

“It’s great that she has finally signed for the fight and I’m delighted that Eddie has been able to make it,” Taylor stated.“After my fight last month I went back home for a week but then it was straight back to Connecticut to start the hard work in training camp for this fight. When I turned professional my first goal was to win a World title but then my next priority was to become undisputed champion so obviously this fight gives me the opportunity to do that so it’s massive for my career.

One of Taylor’s toughest fights to date, Persoon (43-1) defeated Erica Farias back in 2014 to win the WBC Lightweight Title. She has successfully defended the belt nine times, and has 18 total wins via knockout. This will be Persoon’s first time boxing in the United States, having spent the majority of her time fighting in Belgium.

Women’s boxing has been through an awakening the past two years. With the landscape changing, it was only a matter of time until undisputed fights were to take place. Now that their moment has come, Taylor and Persoon are ready to put on a show.
