Soccer US Dominates Costa Rica, Columbia Tops Paraguay on Copa America Day 5 by Staff Post June 8, 2016 After Tuesday’s action, Columbia is atop Group A with six points. United States v Costa Rica 4-0 The United States was able to rebound against Costa Rica after a disappointing opening game against Columbia. Clint Dempsey started the United States goal spree in the 9th minute as he took a successful penalty kick after Bobby Wood was pushed from behind in the box. Jermaine Jones would add to the lead in the 37th minute when he stole the ball in midfield, passed it to Dempsey who gave it back to Jones who scored. In the 42nd minute of the match, Wood gave the United States a 3-0 as he received a ball in from Dempsey knocking it past the Costa Rican goalkeeper. Things wouldn’t get better for Costa Rica as the second half would be dominated by the U.S. Their best chance was a header Bryan Ruiz sent in that hit the post. Graham Zusi extended the United States lead with a shot in the 87th minute. U.S. goaltender Brad Guzan was also able to complete the shutout. Columbia v Paraguay 2-1 Within the first 30 minutes of the match, Columbia clinched a berth into the tournaments quarterfinals. Carlos Bacca gave Columbia the 1-0 lead in the 12th minute after he connected on a corner kick taken by James Rodriguez. In the 30th minute, Rodriguez extended Columbia’s lead before halftime. Columbia can thank goalkeeper David Ospina for his stellar performance as Paraguay pressed in the second half.
