USA Star Jordan Burrough Leads Group at Beat the Streets Event

IMG_3171The annual Beats the street competition took place on May 20, in the heart of broadway. The event featured Men’s and Women’s Freestyle, Greco and Junior Freestyle. The Americans won seven of nine bouts against their counterparts.

Beats the Streets’ mission statement is ” to develop the full human and athletic potential of the urban youth and to strengthen the culture of New York City Wrestling”

This event is a fundraiser for the Beat the Street program, which provides wrestling opportunities for more than 2,500 young people in New York City each year.

Jordan Burrough kept his Beat the Streets winning streak intact after handily defeating 2015 Asian Games champion Peyman Yarahmadi of Iran 11-2. Burrough had an exciting feet-to- back takedown, worth four points.

Another highlight win for the American Freestylers came when 2013 Junior World champion Kyle Snyder beat 2014 World bronze medalist Javier Cortina, 4-0. Snyder, a NCAA runner-up as a freshman for Ohio State , won his first U.S Open title a few months ago.

American women, including three-time world champion Adeline Gray, won two matches against their Canadian counterparts. Three-time world champion Adeline Gray beat Canada’s Pan- Am champion, Justin Di Stasio 11-0. This was Gray’s first time competing at this event.

The United States reigned supreme in three of it’s four Junior -level matched against Iran, with wins from Daton Fix of Oklahoma, Mitchell McKee of Minnesota and Mark Hall of Minnesota. All four of the U.S athletes competing at this level were 2016 UWW Junior National Champions.

Former NFL great Ray Lewis served as Team USA.honorary coach. After all the competition was done, folks were treated to a nice entertaining gala over at the Playstation Theater.

This is the fourth time this event has been held in Times Square in it’s six- year history. Beats the Streets , was once held in Grad Central Terminal and on the deck of the U.S.S Intrepid aircraft.
