Feature USMNT Clinch Group A at 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup by Jayson Love July 11, 2015 from faz.net – Jurgen Klinsmann, USMNT’s Manager Though they haven’t looked overly impressive, the United States Men’s National Soccer Team have won its first two games against Honduras and Haiti respectively. On the strength of 3 goals from Clint Dempsey in the two games and its 6 points garnered from the matches, the US are good enough to clinch the top spot in Group A ahead of its final match against Panama. Sound familiar? – it’s a similar lack of apparent cohesion to that of the USA Women when they played their group stages matches about a month ago at the World Cup. Although, in the case of the US men, it seems to be more on the level of execution than tactics. To an extent, the type of criticism the US men and women have faced means the U.S. is arriving as a soccer nation. For years, the national teams could go on their business and fans would simply be happy with results no matter how they came. Now, US fans want more – they want to be a soccer power and it shows in the criticism that’s followed these two results on the heels of two Friendly victories at the Netherlands and Germany. They saw what they believe this team is capable of and somehow a 2-1 win over Honduras and 1-0 over Haiti just doesn’t inspire US supporters and that is a positive sign. This nation, once indifferent to the beautiful game, now cares about its soccer.
