Baseball Vargas Excels but Cyclones Drop Series to Staten Island by Stefany Romero July 11, 2018 During their last game facing the Staten Island Yankees, the Brooklyn Cyclones had Mets pitcher Jason Vargas up on the mound. Vargas had a rehab start with the Cyclones on Monday due to a sprained right calf injury. He covered six scoreless innings and struck out nine. He allowed no hits and one walk in the 64 pitch outing. Vargas didn’t seem to face any injury related struggle which puts him on a good path on his return to the majors. Noah Syndergaard, who made his rehab start on Sunday with the Brooklyn Cyclones, will return to the New York Mets rotation on Friday night, after leaving a week ago with a strained ligament in his right index finger. Despite Vargas exiting with a 1-0 lead, the Cyclones lost to Staten Island after Mike Ford (RA) and Miguel Flames took newcomer Joshua Walker deep in the seventh inning. Walker, a left-handed pitcher acquired from the Kingsport Mets this week, gave up two home runs but pitched well enough to strike out five. Walker was drafted by the Mets with the 37th pick in 2017 out of New Haven. The Cyclones dropped two of three against Staten Island and now sit at .500 on the season. Brooklyn will travel to Maryland to begin a three game set with the Aberdeen IronBirds, Wednesday at 7:05 pm. Last time the two teams met, Aberdeen swept a three-game series in Brooklyn.
