Four Pirates scored in double-figures as the Seton Hall women’s basketball team won its BIG EAST opener with a 64-54 victory at Providence on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The contest marked the start of conference play for both the Pirates.

Seton Hall guard Tabatha Richardson-Smith led all scorers with 16 points, while Tiffany Jones had a 13-point 10-rebound double-double. Shakena Richardson added 12-points and a team-high five assists and Aleesha Powell finished with 10 points.

Taylor Byrne also set career-highs in points with nine and rebounds with six and Lubirdia Gordon pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds in the win.

With the help of Gordon and Byrne, the Pirates out-rebounded the Friars by 12 and out-scored PC 17-8 in the second quarter. In the same quarter, Richardson-Smith eclipsed the 1,500 career point mark, becoming the seventh Pirate all-time to hit the mark.

The Hall took a nine-point lead to the break. The Pirates went up by as many as 15 in the second half before a late Providence rally cut the deficit as close as six late in the fourth quarter before the Pirates closed out the victory.

The Pirates head west to continue BIG EAST play with a New Year’s Eve showdown at Creighton. The Hall and the Bluejays will square off on Dec. 31 at 2 p.m.
