Baseball Weekend Rewind – Jets Rebound, Giants Beat Up, Yanks Surviving Join me as I take a look around the NY/NJ sports scene of the past weekend. Which teams are on the move upward and which are falling? by Staff Post September 20, 2010 Join me as I take a look around the NY/NJ sports scene of the past weekend. Which teams are on the move upward and which are falling? The Yankees are hanging tough. Despite winning just four of their last ten games, New York remains atop the American League East standings. They lead the Tampa Bay Rays by a half game. Andy Pettitte returned to the team yesterday and pitched six strong innings, leaving with a two run lead. The Yankees bullpen ended up losing the game but the return of Pettitte is a good sign. The Yankees and Rays begin a four game series in the Bronx tonight. Joe Torre and Don Mattingly will be returning to Yankee Stadium tonight to be a part of George Steinbrenner Night. The Yankees will be honoring their late owner with a ceremony in monument park. That other New York baseball team, the Mets, continue to struggle. They have won five of their last ten and are now in a tie for fourth place in the National League East. They lost three straight to the Atlanta Braves over the weekend. After a disappointing week 1 loss, the New York Jets rebounded with a big win over the New England Patriots. Quarterback Mark Sanchez threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns. Tight end Dustin Keller had a huge day, catching seven passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. After giving up two second quarter touchdowns, the Jets defense shut out New England in the second half. The Jets will now prepare for the 2-0, AFC East leading Miami Dolphins. Eli Manning once again lost to his older brother. The Giants had a hard time doing anything in their Sunday Night loss to Indianapolis. The Giants had no pass rush and the defense allowed 410 yards. The younger Manning threw for just 161 yards and the Giants play calling was very questionable. It was an embarrasing effort from the Giants. It looked very similar to last season, one the Giants hoped to forget. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights will host the North Carolina Tar Heels this coming Saturday at 3:30pm. The game time was announced this weekend and will be broadcast live on ESPNU. Rutgers is looking for an improved offensive performance. Despite being 2-0 this season, Rutgers has not looked very good. This is their first big test. Don’t forget to tune in to Double G Sports Radio, today at 6pm EST for more local sports news.
