What’s next for the Mets this offseason?

Thus far, the off-season has been an interesting test for new New York Mets General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen. Some fans have loved his decisions so far and others have really hated them, but that’ll be the case for anything. In my opinion, I think Brodie has really kept with his earlier decree of making the Mets a more competitive team in 2019.

Look at it this way, for the first time since trading for Yoenis Cespedes, the Mets actually pulled off a blockbuster deal for two star players – Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz. They signed Wilson Ramos to a good contract and addressed the need at catcher. They also brought back Jeurys Familia to help in the bullpen. Though I don’t like the contract, it gives them a solid set-up man in front of Diaz.

So far, I think Brodie has done very well in his first off-season, but the only question is, what’s next?

In my opinion, I think the Mets need to address the issue of depth in both the infield and outfield which I mentioned my opinion in a previous article. Both Gerardo Parra and Freddy Galvis are still available and could fill the depth needs very well.

Also, with both Joakim Soria and David Robertson available on the free agent board, I still think the Mets could also target starter turned reliever Bud Norris or Zach Duke as cheaper alternatives to the previously mentioned relief pitchers. Norris specifically could have added value considering his small experience as a closer, which he gained the last two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels. Though Norris is coming off three back to back one-year contracts and may want a multi-year deal, I don’t think either he or Duke would have a steep price to sign.

Overall, I don’t think that the Mets have a desperate need anymore and at this point I think it’s more about adding to make possible weaknesses a little stronger. Following the signing of Ramos, it is now possible that the Mets will look to deal either Travis D’Arnaud, Tomas Nido, or Kevin Plawecki to fill in one of the issues I mentioned above now that they have some depth at the position.

It doesn’t matter at this point if it’s depth for the outfield, infield or bullpen, the point is I think the Mets are far from finished this off-season and if Brodie has taught us anything, we should expect the unexpected.
